Travel

Cardston is located on Highway 2, about 20 miles north of the US border. We are 2 1/2 hours south of the Calgary International Airport (YYC), 3 hours northwest of Great Falls, and 2 1/2 hours northeast of Kalispell Montana. We can arrange for shuttles to and from Calgary and Great Falls if you would rather not rent a car.

If you plan on flying and don't want to pay the exorbitant fee for taking your bike with you, you can ship your bike via USPS or UPS or DHL to Babb, Montana for about $20. We can then have your bike set up and waiting for you when you arrive! Do you trust us??? SURE you do! Contact us for further information...

Crossing the Border

Crossing the Canada/US border is really pretty simple, going either direction. Here are a few things that may help smooth the process for you.

When crossing the border the primary rule to remember is "DON'T JOKE AROUND!!!" Border guards do NOT have a sense of humor, and the quickest way to be detained for a very intense couple of hours of body cavity inspection is to say something stupid at the line. Knowing most of you as well as I do from your posts on BikeJournal, this will take a HUGE amount of self-control!

They usually only ask a few questions:

  1. You are a citizen of what country?
  2. Where do you live?
  3. Where are you going?
  4. How long will you be out of the country?
  5. What will you be doing? Is this trip for business or pleasure?
  6. Are you carrying any alcohol, tobacco, firearms, mace/pepper spray?
  7. Are you bringing anything with you that you will leave in Canada? What is its value?
  8. Returning to the US, it'll be, "What is the total value of all goods purchased in Canada that you are bringing home with you?"
  9. Going back into the U.S. they may ask if you have any fruit/vegetables/meat products. Don't even THINK about taking any meat products or fruit into the US with you. If you DO have stuff like this with you they will make you throw it away.

Here's a few points to remember:

  • You MUST have proof of citizenship. A driver's license or other photo ID alone isn't sufficient any more. Bring your Birth Certificate, Green Card, or Passport along with photo ID (unless your proof of citizenship has a relatively recent photo attached).
  • Answer the guard's questions HONESTLY, but do NOT offer any other information. Simple, straight answers will get you through quickest.
  • DON'T try to smuggle anything into or out of the country. Keep it clean, folks!
  • Bring proof of citizenship!
  • They'll probably ask you to open the trunk for a quick inspection. Tidy=quicker crossing!
  • DON'T bring any firearms with you. It's just easier that way.
  • Did I mention BRING PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP EVERY TIME YOU CROSS THE BORDER?!!!!!

Lodging/Accommodations/Camping

Camping
- Lee Creek Campground - Click here to see a list of those camping out...

Local Inns and Motels
- Trail's End
- Flamingo Motel
- South Country Inn

Bed and Breakfasts
- Cobblestone Manor

We have a great campground in town (amenities to be listed later...), and Rob is arranging a special rate for ReUnion attendees with the South Country Inn, the best hotel in town. We're also arranging a special rate for ReUnion attendees to be able to enjoy the hot tub at South Country, if desired.

There are also a few bed-and-breakfast options in the area. I'll post more info here...

Food and Drink

We have two grocery stores and three convenience stores in town. We also have a couple of Chinese buffets, Pizzas and Cream, (a nice 50's style pizza and ice cream emporium), yotee's (as in "Coyotee's"), a family-style restaurant, the Remington Carriage Center (very cool museum of - what else - carriages) cafeteria, a Dairy Queen, and the Cobblestone Manor, a rather nice, very charming restaurant located across the street from the campgrounds.

Regarding the availablity of alcoholic beverages, Cardston is a "dry" town, so you'll want to stock up in Lethbridge, Fort Macleod, or Calgary before continuing on to town. Canadian beers are generally 5% alcohol, and there are several local brews and micro-brews the afficianado may want to sample. Please drink responsibly, and NEVER drink and drive/ride!
